Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about ordering, delivery, caring for your rug, our services and our live auctions. Can't find your answer? Our team is a phone call away.

Ordering & Payment

You can order directly through our online store, or visit our Fourways showroom to see pieces in person before you buy. If you've seen a rug online and would like more photos or details first, contact us — we're happy to send additional images before you commit.

Yes. Every rug on our site is physically in our Fourways showroom, so you're welcome to view it in person. If you can't visit, ask us for additional photographs or a video of any piece — detail shots, colour in natural light, the reverse of the weave.

Our prices reflect careful, honest valuation of each piece — and we run regular promotions, clearance ranges and live auctions where exceptional value can be found. Speak to us in-store about any piece you love.

Delivery & Collection

Delivery is free in Fourways, Bryanston and the surrounding suburbs — and collection from our showroom is always free, on any piece, however large.

Everywhere else, your delivery fee is a fixed amount shown at checkout — never an estimate, and never a quote to follow. It depends on the size of the rug and where you are:

  • Johannesburg — from R99, up to R749 for the largest pieces
  • Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein — from R149, up to R999
  • Outlying areas — from R179, up to R1,199

Most rugs fall into the lower fees. Enter your address at checkout and you'll see the exact amount before you pay.

Yes — we deliver across South Africa using reliable, tracked couriers. Our customers regularly receive rugs everywhere from Cape Town to Knysna to Limpopo.

These pieces — along with our largest rugs — are delivered with individual care rather than a standard courier fee. We'll confirm the delivery cost with you within 24 hours of your order, based on your address. Collection from the showroom remains free.

Orders placed before 14:00 are processed within two business days, and transit takes a further 3–5 business days depending on where you are — Johannesburg is usually at the quicker end of that range. The moment your order ships, you'll receive a tracking number and a link to follow it.

Of course. Choose collection when ordering, or contact us and we'll have your rug ready at the Fourways showroom.

Returns & Exchanges

If a rug isn't right for your space, we welcome returns and exchanges — please contact us as soon as possible after delivery, with the rug unused and in its original condition. Full terms and timeframes are set out in our Refund Policy.

Please inspect your rug on delivery. If anything arrives damaged, contact us within 48 hours with photographs of the piece and its packaging, and we'll put it right.

Yes — this is one of the most common reasons customers exchange, and we're happy to help you find the right piece instead. To avoid the situation entirely, consider our free home consultation: our team visits with samples so you can see rugs in your actual space before deciding.

Rug Care & Maintenance

Vacuum regularly without a beater bar, rotate the rug every few months so it wears and fades evenly, and use a non-slip underlay — it protects the rug's foundation as well as keeping it in place. Keep rugs out of prolonged direct sunlight where possible.

Act quickly: blot — never rub — with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside of the spill inward. For minor marks on Persian and Oriental rugs we stock a specially formulated carpet sponging solution. For anything serious, call us before attempting home remedies; the wrong treatment can set a stain permanently.

For most rugs in regular use, a professional clean every one to two years keeps the wool healthy and the colours true — more often in high-traffic areas or homes with pets. Our cleaning service returns your rug dry, fresh and looking its best within about two weeks.

We strongly recommend one. A non-slip underlay prevents movement and accidents on hard floors, cushions the rug's foundation against wear, and helps it lie flat. We stock underlay cut to multiple sizes.

Cleaning, Repairs & Services

Yes — our professional cleaning service is open to all rugs, wherever they were bought. We can collect from your home and deliver back to you once the clean is complete.

Yes. Repairing a Persian rug must be done with great care to preserve its value and beauty — our restoration team handles everything from fringe and edge repair to re-weaving damaged sections. We'll assess the piece and advise honestly, including the risks, before any work begins.

We do. Whether you're redecorating completely or simply want a fresh look, bring your rug to us — we buy quality pieces and offer trade-ins against new purchases.

Yes — we provide valuation certificates for insurance purposes and damage assessments, drawing on generations of expertise in the trade.

Our interior design team visits your home with samples, free of charge, and helps you choose the right size, colour and style in your actual space. It takes the guesswork out of the decision entirely — contact us to book.

Live Auctions

Our online auctions let you bid in real time on curated pieces — handmade Persian rugs, modern designs and select décor — at competitive auction pricing. Each auction is time-bound and transparent. Register to bid, watch the lots that interest you, and place your bids before the auction closes.

Create an account with your full details — name, contact number and delivery address — and accept the auction terms. Every bidder is then approved by our team before bidding, which keeps our auctions genuine for everyone taking part. There is never any charge to register or to bid.

Yes. All bids placed are legally binding — only bid an amount you're prepared to pay. Auction purchases are also excluded by law from the seven-day cooling-off period that applies to ordinary online orders.

Some lots carry a reserve — a minimum price below which the item won't be sold. If bidding doesn't reach the reserve, the lot remains unsold. You'll see whether the reserve has been met on the lot page.

If a bid is placed in the final five minutes, the auction extends by a further five minutes. This gives everyone a fair chance to respond and prevents a lot being won by a last-second bid.

You'll be notified by email as soon as the auction closes, with a link to complete your purchase online. Payment must be made within 48 hours. Delivery on auction pieces is arranged individually — we'll confirm the cost with you based on your address, or you're welcome to collect from the showroom free of charge.

If payment isn't completed within 48 hours, the piece is offered to the next-highest bidder. Heriz Gallery also reserves the right to restrict a bidder's access to future auctions.

The earliest valid bid at the highest amount takes precedence.

Yes — viewing appointments can be arranged at our Fourways showroom. Contact us to book a time.

About Our Rugs

Yes. We import from the key weaving countries of the former Persian Empire — Iran, Turkey, Afghanistan and India — and every piece is selected from reputable weavers and manufacturers. Each rug passes our internal quality checks, and each handmade piece is a genuine one-of-a-kind.

A handmade rug is knotted by hand over weeks or months — every one is unique, they last generations, and the best appreciate in value. Machine-made rugs are produced with modern methods and materials to a designer's pattern, offering beautiful classic or contemporary looks at more accessible prices. We stock both, honestly labelled, and will always tell you exactly what you're buying.

Refurbished rugs are pre-owned pieces — often fine handmade Persians — that our workshop has professionally cleaned and restored. They offer genuine handmade quality at a significantly lower price, and each one is assessed and prepared by our own team before it reaches the floor.

That's the signature of the human hand. Slight variations in pattern, colour shading (known as abrash) and shape are natural characteristics of handmade rugs — they're evidence of authenticity, not defects.
