How to Value a Persian Rug: 8 Things That Decide the Price
There is no simple calculator for the value of a Persian rug. Two rugs of the same size can differ in value many times over. A specialist looks at a combination of eight things.
1. Origin
Persian rugs are named after the city or region where they are woven, such as Tabriz, Kashan, Isfahan, Nain, Qom or Heriz. Each has its own style and quality range. Read our guide to types of Persian rugs.
2. Knot density
More knots per square inch allow finer detail and take longer to weave. Density alone does not decide value, but it is a key sign of quality. See our guide to weave density.
3. Materials
High-quality hand-spun wool with a natural lustre is worth more than dull or brittle wool. Silk, or silk highlights, increases the value of fine city rugs.
4. Dyes
Natural vegetable dyes age into soft, rich tones. Harsh synthetic dyes, or colours that have run, reduce value.
5. Age
Rugs of about 100 years or more are usually called antique. Rugs of a few decades are often called vintage or semi-antique. Age adds value only when the rug is in good condition.
6. Condition
Even pile, sound edges and fringes, and no moth damage, dry rot or stains keep value high. Good professional repairs keep a rug usable; poor repairs reduce value. See our repair and restoration service.
7. Size
Larger rugs take longer to weave and cost more. Very large or unusual sizes can be harder to sell, which affects their market value.
8. Design and rarity
Well-drawn, balanced designs, rare patterns and signed workshop pieces are worth more. Popular colour schemes also affect demand.
