Second-Hand and Refurbished Persian Rugs: What to Check Before You Buy
A well-made Persian rug is built to outlive its first owner. That is why a second-hand rug can be one of the best-value buys in a home: you get a handmade piece, often with softer colours and more character, at a lower price than a new rug of the same quality.
What "refurbished" means at Heriz Gallery
Our refurbished Persian rugs are pre-owned, handmade rugs that go through our own workshop before they go on sale. Each rug is assessed, cleaned, and repaired where needed. Typical work includes securing or replacing fringes, rebinding edges, and reweaving small worn areas. You can read more about the process on our rug repair and restoration page.
Seven checks before you buy a second-hand rug
- Turn it over. The back of a hand-knotted rug shows the pattern clearly. Look for patches, glue or large reweaves.
- Look for moth damage. Check the back and under furniture marks for bare patches or small holes. Moth damage can spread if it is not treated.
- Test for dry rot. Gently fold a corner. If you hear cracking, the cotton foundation may be weak. That is expensive to fix.
- Check the fringes and edges. Worn fringes and loose edges are common and repairable, but they should be part of the price.
- Check for colour run. Dye that has bled into white or cream areas is hard to reverse.
- Lay it flat. A rug that curls or has waves may have a warped foundation.
- Smell it. A strong musty smell can mean water damage or pet damage.
A rug from a specialist dealer takes these risks away: the checks, the cleaning and the repairs are already done.
