Rug repair and restoration in our own workshop
A Persian rug must be repaired with care, or the repair can cost more than the damage. Our artisans repair and restore hand-knotted and handwoven rugs by hand in our Fourways workshop. We repair all rugs, wherever you bought them.
What we repair
- Holes and worn areas (reweaving)
- Worn or missing fringes (securing or adding new fringes)
- Loose or damaged edges (binding and overcasting)
- Moth damage (treatment and repair)
- Damage from wear, pets and other causes
- Cutting and binding to a new size
How the restoration works
- Evaluation. We assess the type and extent of the damage and give you honest advice, including the risks, before any work starts.
- Cleaning. The rug is cleaned first. This often shows the full extent of the damage.
- Restoration. Damaged areas are rewoven, holes patched, loose threads secured, and edges re-fringed or overcast.
- Colour matching. We choose wool or silk threads that match the original colours and pattern as closely as possible, so the repair blends into the rug.
- Binding and finishing. Edges are bound or finished for strength and a neat look.
- Final clean and inspection. The rug is cleaned again and checked before it goes home.
Cost
Repair costs depend on the extent of the damage and the materials needed. We give you a quote after we assess the rug. Standard finishing work, such as fringes and binding, is listed on our rug cleaning and rates page.
