Bring classic Oriental character and rich, balanced colour into your home with this Blue & Rust Sumak Design Afghan Rug from the Ariana Collection. Measuring 172cm x 120cm, this handmade wool rug combines a deep mid-blue ground with warm rust red and soft cream, complemented by mustard gold, ochre, sage green, navy and burnt orange accents.
The design is built around a central grid of twenty rectangular panels, arranged four across and five down in a traditional compartment layout. Each panel holds its own stylised plant, tree or floral motif, so neighbouring compartments are never quite alike. Around the grid, rows of small stylised sprigs and botanical motifs are set directly on the blue ground, and a narrow outer border gives the composition a neat, structured finish.
Blue establishes the principal colour, forming the open ground around the panels and across the outer frame. Rust red and soft cream dominate the individual compartments, alternating from panel to panel to create a lively chequered rhythm. Mustard gold and ochre panels add warmth, while sage green introduces a softer, earthy note. Navy and burnt orange accents define the smaller motifs and outlines throughout the design.
Handmade in Afghanistan with a wool pile on a cotton foundation, this rug shows the natural tonal variation of the wool, most visible in the softly shifting shades of blue across the ground. The soft pile gives depth to the colours of each panel, while a decorative tasselled fringe with multicoloured wrapped ends finishes each short side.
At 172cm x 120cm, this rug is well suited to an entrance hall, a bedside, a study or a reading corner, and it sits comfortably beneath a coffee table in a smaller seating area. It can also be layered over a larger neutral rug to add a focal point of colour.
